Volcanoes national park- Rwanda Safari

Located in the northwestern part of Rwanda, Volcanoes is one of the most visited destinations in Rwanda and East Africa at large. The park stretches over a total surface area of 160 square kilometers with rainforests and five of the eight volcanic mountains. Also, the park is one of the only four national parks in the world where the endangered mountain gorillas can be watched. Other national parks are; Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda and Virunga national park of Democratic Republic of Congo.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes national park

On the first day of the five-days gorilla trekking and mountain hike, you will meet and greet your driving guide who will brief you about the whole trip as you are having a city tour in Kigali. During the Kigali city tour, you will have different stops at different destinations like Kigali Memorial Center, Kimironko Market, and the Presidential Palace, among others.

After the city tour, you will have lunch at one of the restaurants before continuing to Volcanoes National Park in north western Rwanda. On the trip, you will see rolling hills, gorgeous landscape, terraced farmlands, and locals, among other things. When you arrive, you will check into the lodge, have dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking experience

Wake up for your breakfast at the lodge and meet your guide for the transfer to the park headquarters for briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking experience. After the briefing, you will be assigned to the ranger guides and porters who will escort you to the park jungle in search of the magnificent mountain gorillas. Once allocated, you will be allowed to spend a full hour in their presence as you learn more about their daily lifestyles and taking beautiful photographs. After, walk back to the starting point where you will meet your guide for the transfer back to the lodge for refreshment.

Day 3: Climb mount Karisimbi

Enjoy your early morning breakfast at the lodge and meet your driver guide for the transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters for briefing about the hike. Following the briefing, you will be assigned a park guide and driven to the trekking trailhead, from which you will begin ascending Mount Karisimbi, which reaches 4507 meters above sea level.

Hiking Mount Karisimbi takes around 6 hours. You will travel through volcano edges, ridges, bamboo forest, severe elevations, calderas, and see fauna like as birds and primates. You will have a stopover at a camp at 3,700meters for an overnight and dinner will be arranged.

Day 4: Reach the summit of Karisimbi volcano and descend back to the starting point.

Have your early breakfast before beginning your hike to the summit, where you will take beautiful photos and enjoy spectacular views of the Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira active volcanoes, landscapes, forests, surrounding communities, and other Virunga ranges, among others. After the spectacular views, you will begin your descent down to the starting point, which will take around 3 to 4 hours, and upon arriving, you will be transferred to the lodge for lunch.

Retire back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali

After having breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and meet your driver guide to begin your journey to Kigali International Airport, where you will be dropped off for your departure flight.
