Key Point for Climbers on Routes
Even if you select Kilembe Trail or Bukurungu Trail , at the time of Magherita Summit you will have to join the Rwenzori Central Circuit which is the oldest trail in the Region ( Rwenzori Mountains National park).
Even if you decide to hike Rwenzori Mountains via Virunga National Park , still you will summit via Uganda side and it grants you the chance to enter Uganda without paying for the Visa! This valid crossing is only for the rwenzori Summit and later return to DR Congo.
Each Rwenzori route has it’s own pros and cons. Some are great for scenery, but not so great for acclimatization (see: altitude sickness on Rwenzori ). Others offer high summit success rates but are also quite busy at certain times of the year.
Note : The trails from DRC leading to peaks on Mountain Stanley interconnect with the central circuit and Kilembe trails. The access to the peaks from DRC side is steeper. During rescue operations, it is easier to rescue a victim on Ugandan side than on DRC. There are no Trans – boundary mechanisms to carry out rescues across the frontier.
Routes to Climb Rwenzori Mountains Uganda
The keen climbers can choose between three scenic routes to the top of the Rwenzoris which is Africa’s third-highest peak. The trails pass glacial lakes, gorgeous viewpoints, dramatic mountain passes and lush valleys.
- The central circuit trail:
The Rwenzori Central Circuit trail is the oldest and unique , when planning to explore Magherita peak on budget prices then consider booking that uses this trail with Rwenzori Expeditions. This is a certified Commission agent that books Rwenzori trekking on flat Rates with no extra price charge.The Route Starts from Mihunga, the route ascends the Bujuku Valley via Nyabitaba for acclimatization before reaching the peaks. This is less challenging compared to the Kilembe Trail and the shorted 5 Days Magherita Peak summit is only accepted by PSE via this route.The clients joining the central circuit after Bujuku will transverse the Scott Elliot and Fresh field passes to descend through the Mubuku Valley.

The Rwenzori Central Circuit is managed by Rwenzori Mountaineering services, a company limited by Guarantee incorporated under the laws of Uganda ( Companies Act 2012 as amended). - Kilembe Trail: This is the top Luxury Trail and it offers the great experience when it comes to exploring the Rwenzori Mountains , its managed by Rwenzori Trekking services a private limited company incorporated under the Ugandan Company Law.The route Starts from a trailhead at Kilembe near the town of Kasese and rewards you with the lovely Nyamwanba valley passes glacial lakes and some stunning viewpoints before joining the central circuit at Lake Kitandara.Its worthy noting that when you book your Rwenzori magherita peak , they also summit via the Rwenzori Central Circuit since even the trails from Congo Summit magherita peak via the same point.
If your not fit enough , we recommend that you use the Rwenzori Central Circuit to summit to the peak of Magherita during your climb to the slopes of Rwenzoris. - Bukurungu Trail This is a new trail that is privately owned by Bujuku Eco and its unique in its way as it doesn’t use Camps and Huts for accommodation but Wild Camping . Its recommended to travelers that wish to explore the magical Rwenzori Mountains in the less luxurious Trekking Safaris.It rewards you with the scenic view of the various lakes like Lake Mughuli, Lake Bukurungu, Lake Bujuku, and Lake Irene and for summit to magherita peak you still join the Rwenzori Central Circuit.
Note:
Both routes offer splendid acclimatization profile, with fast climbing at the beginning of the trail, passing through the various vegetation zones of montane forests, bamboo, rain forest and into the giant heather zone in the first two days and after leveling with the slower climb.
